TEAM NOTES
HOU: Joe Mixon turned the clock back and ran for 159 yards despite not having a single carry pick up more than 13 yards. I don't hate the idea of selling high on him -- efficiency hasn't been a calling card of his pretty much ever and I don't think 40 minutes of possession is sustainable.
IND: 9 completions for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns. 56 rush yards and a TD. I'd call that goofy stat line unsustainable, but it's basically all we've seen from Anthnony Richardson at this point. I expect growth with time and he is certainly a fantasy starter across the board -- but not without a few duds thrown in periodically.
JAX: Five different Jags saw 3-4 targets and that's a good way to give us zero confidence in all of them. Evan Engram remains the only "safe" option in this passing game, though I thought Brian Thomas Jr. looked good in the first half before disappearing. The Travis Etienne situation is one to watch -- he scored, but he lost another fumble and was stuffed on a fourth down. Tank Bigsby is deserving of a roster spot (12-73-0).
MIA: Jaylen Wright was inactive, so of course it was Jeff Wilson who led this team in rushing yards. De'Von Achane scored and caught all 7 of his targets -- he's fine, but Raheem Mostert's value is on thin ice. Although he returned in the game, Mostert sustained a shoulder injury in the first half which may have limited his playing time.
CAR: No passing scores despite a favorable game script. No rusher reached 25 yards or receiver 50 yards. Plenty of things change year over year ... but not all things. I don't think there's a player on this roster who is a must roster option (Diontae Johnson turned 6 targets into 19 yards, Chuba Hubbard was out-gained by Miles Sanders).
NO: The Saints put 47 points on the board and Olave ranked sixth on this team in receiving yards. He'll be better, but if you think you're going to out-run these sorts of landmines, you haven't been paying attention.
PIT: The Steelers ran the ball 41 times ... Jaylen Warren finished 4th on the team in carries (2) and yards (7). I downgraded him when Fields was locked in as the starter and while I'm not confident he is any better when Russ is in there, his stock isn't that of a starter as long as Fields' versatility is in the mix.
ATL: Bijan Robinson didn't have a 15-carry 5-catch game with Arthur Smith. In his first game without him (and against him), he carried 18 times and caught all 5 targets. Am 82% carry share is much more along the lines of what we wanted).
BUF: Joe Brady ran Josh Allen into the ground after taking over in Week 11 last season and guess what? Two rushing scores in this game. The passing is going to be hit-and-miss, though I was encouraged by the scheming for this team to get eight players 2-5 targets, but as long as the rushing role is there, Allen is a game-breaker.
ARI: Marvin Harrison had nearly as many targets (3) as yards (4) in his debut. Relax people. Ja'Marr Chase is the only top-10 WR pick over the past 20 years to reach 75 receiving yards in his debut. Less than ideal? Yes. Are you changing anything process wise? Hell no.
CHI: Caleb Williams made some plays, but 3.2 yards per pass attempt against a defense like the Titans isn't going to cut it. Better times are ahead. On the bright side, he showed some mobility and funneled 23 or 29 targets to his star trio of receivers.
TEN: DeAndre Hopkins' snaps were managed in a significant way, but that's not really the reason he wasn't viable -- that distinction belongs to Will Levis. Tony Pollard worked ahead of Tyjae Spears as the clear RB1 and is the only Titan you can feel even remotely good about starting.
NE: We could see a lot of Patriot games look like this -- the better they do, the worse it is for all fantasy assets involved. Selling Rhamondre Stevenson is the move -- this team isn't going to be operating with a lead very often, so I'm not banking on 25 carries again any time soon.
CIN: The Bengals have struggled to produce a viable option next to Chase/Higgins and that didn't change in this spot, even with Higgins out. Yoshi earned targets, but they were largely empty. Mike Gesicki had a touchdown called back -- maybe he can be a DFS punt option with time, but this was a mess. Hopefully Burrow's stock recovers when Higgins returns.
MIN: Sam Darnold looked good and still, no Viking reached 60 receiving yards. Jefferson got there with the touchdown and I don't expect the game script to often work away from this passing game -- I was bold on Jefferson this preseason and I'm not pivoting.
NYG: I didn't see a 32% target share for Wan'Dale Robinson occurring at any point this season, but here we are. The Giants are going to be forced to throw more than they want and that is going to elevate a talent like Malik Nabers (5-66-0 on 7 targets) ... but that's about all you should ever consider inserting into fantasy lineups from this team.
DEN: Bo Nix did little to prove that we should be comfortable counting on Courtland Sutton in any sort of consistent way. There will be a big game here and there for this offense -- but he might be Will Levis and that's not something you're betting on in anything other than a contrarian DFS build.
SEA: Kenneth Walker now has as many 100-yard rush games this season as last. The explosive potential is there and he had a second TD taken off the board -- if this team is going to compete, Walker could be a league-winner
DAL: I don't think we learned anything here. Lamb is as good as it gets, the backfield is still a mess, and Brandin Cooks continues to score despite looking slow (it was an all-out blitz where he was left on his own)
CLE: Jerome Ford was the worst qualified running back in terms of gain rate last season and nothing we saw against Dallas suggests that was a fluke. Volume is only valuable until it's not.
TB: Everyone got there for the Bucs and that's nice, but it's also Washington. I still think regression for Tampa Bay is more likely than not -- I also think that starting every player on your roster when facing the Commies might not be a bad idea.
WAS: Jayden Daniels looked like a rookie and we still wasn't that bad for fantasy managers. This defense is going to force him to be a fantasy asset: it might not be pretty, but much like golf, there are no pictures in the box score.
LV: Brock Bowers led the team in targets (8) and catches (6) in his debut while Michael Mayer was an afterthought (3 yards on 3 targets)
LAC: JK Dobbins joins Tomlinson and Michael Turner as the only Charger backs since 2000 with multiple 45+ yard carries in a single game
