BETS
I’m back to the first round leader well this week. I got overzealous and didn’t check in with the weather. It does appear like there’s a bit of an advantage on Thursday to the AM players, but I’m an idiot, so I have to roll with the picks I’ve made.
WATCH: Scottish + Barbasol Final Bets & Weather
Morikawa — Hopefully he fixed his turf issues from a year ago. In a field this stack you need to look at any sort of value you can find, and somehow, despite the field being weaker, Morikawa has longer odds this week than next.
Spieth — Spieth falls into this same bucket. I picked him up at 40/1, which is double his price next week, which is a stronger field.
Bobert Macintyre — The Scot was a -8 over the weekend in Ireland a week ago and did through his ball striking after needing his putter to carry him the first two days. Hopefully, that injection of his irons corrected his recent struggles; hit’ been a rough couple months. However, any glimpse of good form is enough to back Macintyre at this course at this price.
Hao Tong — Before his win in Germany, Hao Tong had been plagued by one awful round per event, which would completely derail his week. Then, it doesn’t happen, and he wins. Following that up with another win would be asking a lot against this field, but a Top 10, completely doable. He’s already in far better form entering this event than he was in 2020 when he finished T14.
Møller & Schneider — Did you see the o with the line through it? INSTA BET. In reality, of the the second tier EUROS heading stateside this week, Møller & Schneider have the proper skill set and lead in form to give this run in Kentucky. While it’s unlikely any of the Euros win, because it’s unlikely, that any one player will win a field of 156 players, it does seem like the market has under valued these players versus the generic TOUR regular. We know Kelly Kraft’s deal; we don’t know the overall upside of some of the EUROs on courses like this.
Grayson has won here before, so that skill set can fly for Møller.

GALAXY BRAIN: Stars and Scrubs in Scotland
This warm up event for next weeks Open has some penal rough with big, slow greens. What’s that mean? It means I want fairways and proximity. This course grades as a shorter than average course on TOUR, so while extra added distance off the tee is never going to hurt (as long as it doesn’t come at the cost of being in the short stuff), I’m not viewing it as a necessity in this spot. As for proximity: we acknowledge that putting can be finicky on a week-over-week basis, so with big greens/slow greens like this where plenty of people should be able to two-putt, I want to focus on the guys sticking it tight and giving them a chance for the one-putt.
That said, you can never fully discount distance, so I’m using Fantasynational to take a look at the top players in this field that rank, over their past 36 rounds, top-15 in both fairways and good drives on tracks that include at least average length rough.
Now, you could throw all those guys into a DK lineup, leave $2,800 on the table and surely be unique. That’s probably not right, but it’s there if you’re chasing a GPP and desperately want to have a 1-of-1 roster. Let’s get to the second part of the equation. Because this is on the shorter end of courses, I’m going to ignore approach shots from 200+. Below is a list of players that have a green Fantasynational box for every range under 200 yards in terms of proximity over their past 36 rounds on average-to-slow greens:
As you’d expect, plenty of names from the top of the board, but now we have a nice mix between the two lists. You’ll notice that not one, not two, but three names appear on BOTH lists. So what could a lineup look like if you are building around those three ($8,500 left per player)?
The TIDBITS
Scottish Open Weather
Look, I don’t want to harp on my American pals too much here, because it’s certainly not all of you, it’s actually a slim minority, however when you start incorporating things about other countries into the mix, there’s bound to be questions. I don’t mean to stereotype, but I had multiple people send me scathing emails about the weather at the Open Championship last year because the times listed on the weather report we local time not their time zone and how it ruined how they made their lineups. So, has a heads up to everyone out there, the times on the weather report are local to North Berwick, Scotland; not Topeka, Kansas. Because… common sense. Actually I found the Dirleton Tower was closer to the course than the North Berwick tower.
As it stands right now, the best pocket of weather appears to be coming from the Thursday AM wave. Both afternoons look dicey, and Friday AM looks worse than Thursday AM. Nothing outrageous, and we know wind can flip pretty quickly on an exposed Scottish course, so tread carefully. I allocated 20 of my 50 lineups to AM/PM stacks. Could be far more beneficial for R1 DK showdown and FRL bets.
SCOTTISH OPEN WIND TOWER: Dirleton
For next week, as I’m certain you’ll wanna be refreshing the weather page twice an hour to see if anything opens up. You’ll likely want to book mark that now.
