CUT SWEAT LIVE
Me, Geoff and Friends will be sweating the Masters cut line LIVEEEEEEE starting at 430pm ET Friday. Set a reminder.
Also, David Jones is coming off a Six Figure win in MLB, and he’s hosting Fantasy Baseball Picks and Bets for the Friday slate (out at Midnight on MNN), and Meaney and CAM FUCKING STEWART are up for the Friday slate on Fantasy Hockey Picks and Bets out in the morning. People are wanting MORE CAM yet don’t tune into the hockey show he’s on every Friday. Change that. Sub to the Mayo Media Youtube channel for all this stuff. UFC Picks are out now too.
Oh, thank you for signing up for One and Done (hope it’s going well so far for you), the rush last evening was awesome. Once again, all the support this week has been amazing. Really appreciate it.
We’re doing the MASTERS SWAG draw LIVE on the show Friday, and all you need to do to be in the draw is be subbed to this newsletter.
If you want to see the items available to win, check out Monday’s post.
PS: We’re going to try and do a recap pod after the cut sweat for the pod feed too if you need something to listen to on a Friday evening.
DRAFTKINGS OWNERSHIP
As expected, there was one Spieth to rule them all in the $10 DraftKings Millionaire maker. (Credit to Skylar for getting these together every week)
Bernhard Langer (3.25%) came in higher than Kevin Na, Kevin Kisner, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Francesco Molinari, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter, Gary Woodland, and Victor Perez. Didn’t expect that. Hatton, I get because he was so expensive, but the other guys leave me flummoxed. Like, if you’re going to play a 63 year old because he has great course history (which I completely understand at Augusta), how doesn’t the same logic apply to Justin Rose? I understand he’s coming off a back injury and there’s around $1K in price difference, but still seems strange to me.
It’s funny, because I wrote the above paragraph around 9am ET this morning. Didn’t expect Rose to go full ham on the field on fire an opening 65. Rose certainly has the game and experience to go wire-to-wire but after making eagle at No. 8 absolutely everything went right for him. If there was a 10-footer for par to me made. It was. 15-Feet for birdie. Make. It may be one of the best rounds Rose has ever played, which is really saying something for a former No. 1 ranked player in the world. With a birdie at 18, it would have been the most strokes gained in any one round in Masters history.
Expect regression in some facet of his game Friday. Eventually you miss some of those tricky 5-footers. Rose is only $7,000 in Round Two DraftKings showdown. Seem like a great fade spot. If you want to build a whole bunch of lineups use Fantasy National to make it easy on yourself.
There’s also this working against Rose
He needs something else to curse after Tommy Fleetwood made his hole in one on 16. Cust couldn’t even get the no hole in one bet to the weekend this year.
WEATHER
There was rain expected all week come Friday along with a dose of strong wind gusts, but that looks like it may not materialize. Friday actually looks great, so expect another day of fast and firm out there. There could be some rain over night, but hopefully not so much the DryAir system can’t take care of it.
NOTES
Honestly, even players at +6 seem like they’re live to make the cut. It would take an under par round, obviously, but even if it plays 75% as tough as Thursday, the cut line is likely to be ++3/+4 unless they get really generous with the pin placements.
Brooks looked noticeably beat up after making the turn, but it was encouraging to see him rally at the end of the round. Outside of an awful drive on No. 7, Brooks was fantastic with the driver, and the short-range putting was excellent as well. The irons, not so much. They were either way too short or way too long. If he can sort out the distance control on approaches he’s live to get back in the mix.
I’m hoping Spieth doesn’t win, as I don’t have a bet on him, but fuck is he fun to follow around. He’s playing tree hockey, chipping in for eagles, missing two footers, yet still somehow scrambling at an elite level. It’s a fun watch.
If JT can find his putter he’s going to go nuclear one of these round. Burned so many edges.
Dustin was all over the place and it finally caught up to him on the last hole. Frankly, if not for some nice par saves from distance it really could have been worse.
Who knows what’s going on with Bryson? Because I don’t. Ditto for Cantlay.
Webb three putted twice in the first five holes. The irons were particularly sharp but he really managed the course well. If he can get those irons firing, Webb is going to be in contention late Sunday.
I watched every shot from Si WOOOOOO, and what a fucking ride. He played really well and just made some weird hiccups. He was chipping like a madman early on, then twice decided to take out his putter from off the green on 7 and 11 and made two bogeys. He tried to get toooooo aggressive on 15 and get the ball to stop next to the hole. NOPE, water. Then he three putted 16. He also three-putted for par on 8 after starting with an eagle look. He made a couple lengthy putts but missed every single makable mid-range birdie putt all day. Get it figured out WOOOOOO and you’re very much in this. The ball striking was on point.
Ryan Palmer was +2 but parred each of the four Par 5s.
Bubba Watson three-putted each of the final two holes after missing a short birdie putt on 16. Could have been a lot better.
Despite shooting +2, Bobby Mac and Ian Poulter both actually tied for second with five birdies on Thursday. As you can see, VIK didn’t do well in the “Others Avoided” category. Hell of a comeback from him after his triple on the opening hole.
Rory continued his run of first round misery, but he always seems to bounce back pretty quickly. Playing Prize Picks is the best to take advantage. Rory is going to try and fire at every pin tomorrow. Create a Prize Picks account here, and use code “MMN” to get in on the action. It’s a fun, and quite beatable game.
Friend of the show Justin Ray as been a must follow during action. So follow him, if you don’t. And if you don’t already, that’s weird. But you can rectify that. Of all the stats he put out, this was the one with the most interest for me.
The books are being pretty stingy with their odds, here is the betting board after Round 1
I really thought Si WOOOOOOO would be longer than +5000. I haven’t made any more bets to win since the event started, but Kim at +5000 isn’t bad right now for how he’s playing. LOL at Bryson’s odds btw. If you wanted to take a stab at the top of the board, I’m thinking Webb has the best value at +2000.
BETS
Cody gave out his Bellator parlays for the card. He wanted to get it out early before the lines get hammered.
As we’ve discovered the past few cards, while UFC chlak doesn’t always come through, it seems to in Bellator. Cody always drops his UFC version of this on Saturday afternoon on Twitter fyi.
You can check out Paul and Cody’s full UFC picks on the Dog Or Pass Podcast on MMN.
Moose wins the “something that could have been brought to my attentions YESTERDAY” award for the day.
