Collin Morikawa
We’ve seen nothing close to peak Morikawa performance in any of three 2022 starts, so now’s the time to buy the dip. He’s made both cuts at THE RIV in his career and absolutely lit up the join with his irons — gaining an average of 6.9 SG: APP in this two starts. The putting has been a real problem, however. He finished T43 a year ago and, while finishing second in approach, lost 7.5 strokes on the greens. Being an awful putter isn’t new to Morikawa, though. And every few even the rolls it OK on the greens and wins. Let’s hope this is one of those weeks.
Robert MacIntyre
Robert MacIntyre, the remaining International making his 2022 PGA debut, needs to be taken very serious based on the success of left-handed players at Riviera. Since 2000, Bubba Watson has completely the LA Turkey at the Genesis with a trio of victories, while Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir both have a pair of wins. Currently ranked No. 66 in the world, the young Scotsman made a splash in his Augusta debut a year ago, finishing T12, and earning another invitation this year. It was a tough start for Bobby Mac to kick off 2022 with a pair of missed cuts in the first two Middle East event, but has since followed it up with a pair of Top 15s in the Ras al Khaimah Championship series theist two weeks.

GENESIS GALAXY BRAIN: Complete Profile
This week, more than most, I want a complete golfer profile. “Thanks Pat, I want to target good golfers … you’re not the best in the biz for nothing.” I get it. Not reinventing the wheel here, but it may surprise you where we land.
This course plays longer than the measured distance with short rough, so bombers enter play with a distinct advantage, but that’s not the only skill that you need. There’s also a very low GIR rate at The Riv. That means you either have to stick those iron shots OR boast an immaculate around the green game. Simple enough. I’m looking at the past 36 rounds on long courses over at Fantasy National and filtering out those that rank top-35 in distance gained off the tee and top-10 either in GIRs gained or SG:ARG …
Interesting list of names for sure. Hell, if you want to make a stars-and-scrubs DK lineup from that one chart alone, you very well could:
But let’s drill down a bit further. If missed short putts are going to be the norm, that tells me two things: this is going to be maddening to watch AND those guys that roll it well from distance are going to be extra valuable. You know, those instances when two players are on the green in two and both looking at 25-feet for birdie … there are going to be some two shot swings in those spots and we want to be in a position to benefit from those dramatic swings. Of the golfers left on the board from the chart above, only three are top-50 in this field (past 36 rounds on Poa) in SG:P in both the 20-25 range and the 25+ range:
Rory McIlroy: 2nd and 43rd
Rickie Fowler: 46th and 46th
Dustin Johnson: 49th and 26th
Will Z is great in that specific 20-25 range and Rahm/Thomas are among the elite at 25+, but those three names from above offer the best blend of those two thresholds. I’m on Rickie more than the other two in this spot, but constructing an outright card that features two of the 10 favorites and a bomb? Not a bad way to play this, leaving a few bullets in the chamber for live action as the picture comes more into focus.
